A skeptical husband tries Essential Oils

What follows is my husbands recent experience with our essential oils. He was a skeptic but has always supported me in my quest to make our family healthier.

Enjoy!

My experience with essential oils is full of skepticism and doubt. When my wife introduced our family to these expensive bottles of mystery liquids I honestly saw a money pit and to some degree I still do, but in the last weeks I think I started coming around to the idea that there might be something to these oils. I’ve seen them calm my child whom is afflicted with ADHD. He was able to focus and complete his schoolwork quickly and with A+ accuracy.

Last week I came down with the stomach flu. I took pepto bismol and immodium to try and quell my symptoms, but they proved ineffective. My wife gave me some combination of oils and 30 minutes later I actually FELT the effects. I felt different after she administered the oils to me. There aren’t many medicines out there that make me feel different after taking them. The only ones that come to mind are controlled substances and Benadryl. I was able to attend class that evening after I used the oils which is good because I had missed so many already. Following that experience, a few days later, I was having a real hard time with seasonal allergies. It was getting to the point where I was going to pop a couple of Benadryl tablets which would knock me out for a couple hours leaving my wife to fend for herself.

She offered an alternative oil concoction which I accepted. I swallowed the capsule and within about 30 minutes I was dead to the world. The oils knocked me out cold but they also knocked out my symptoms. No more runny nose, no more itchy eyes, no more sneezing etc. etc. When I woke up I did not have a telltale Benadryl hangover either. I was tired but able to be alert and also able to shake off that tiredness quickly. Had I taken the Benadryl I would have been in a state of recovery for 30 minutes to an hour after waking up (essentially still useless to anyone). So I wasn’t able to avoid the crash that comes with quelling the histamines in my body, which sucks for my wife who had to take care of the boys and the house on her own for a couple hours on a day where she would normally have my help.

That being said, the lack of a Benadryl hangover made it worth it for me and it’s unlikely that I’ll be taking those little pink tablets again if I can avoid it. So I suppose the million dollar question is “Are you convinced?” I wouldn’t say I’m 100% convinced. I’m not going to replace my doctor and give up regular FDA approved medications. I am, however, ready to give these oils a shot on common ailments and beyond. Perhaps they’re not the money pit I thought they were.

  1. I have actually never used any essential oils for anything except garlic oil (is that considered essential?) for my kiddos ear infections. It works — makes me wonder why I haven’t tried any more. You’ve got me thinking!
